What is the Frozen Shoulder/STIFF Trial?

Frozen Shoulder is a condition where shoulder movement becomes painful and restricted due to inflammation and stiffness (Adhesive Capsulitis). The STIFF Trial (Steroid vs. PRP Injections for Frozen Shoulder) is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigating whether platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or corticosteroid injections provide better pain relief and mobility improvement for Frozen Shoulder.

How is Frozen Shoulder treated?

Current treatment options include:

  • Corticosteroid Injections – Reduces inflammation and pain.

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections – Stimulates natural healing and tissue repair.

  • Physiotherapy & Stretching – Helps restore mobility over time.

  • Hydrodilatation & Surgery – Used for severe or prolonged cases.

Our trial compares PRP vs. Cortisone to determine the most effective option for Frozen Shoulder.

Who can participate?

You may be eligible if you have painful shoulder stiffness with restricted movement, loss of external rotation (common in Frozen Shoulder) and a normal shoulder X-ray (no fractures or arthritis). Doctors & referrers: If your patient meets these criteria, we welcome referrals.

Why this trial is important.

PRP and cortisone injections are commonly used, but strong comparative evidence is lacking. PRP may promote healing, while cortisone reduces inflammation, and we aim to determine which is superior for Frozen Shoulder. This study will provide evidence-based guidance for the best treatment approach.
